ABOUT TWO STRIKES “Do you know what that means when a human being has two strikes?...I am black and I am a woman.” asserts artist Madelyn Sneed-Grays in her artist statement for her 2020 self-portrait Two Strikes. Sneed-Grays, an emerging artist based in Fort Worth, TX, created this work in response to rarely seeing herself in artistic spaces; she notes that artists in “18 major US museums are 85% white and 87% male” and that women make up just 2% of the art market." –Madelyn Sneed-Grays on Two Strikes now on view at LSU MOA
ABOUT THE ARTIST Madelyn Sneed-Grays is a representational oil painter born in Dallas, TX. She graduated from the University of North Texas in 2014 with a B.F.A in Studio Art. Sneed-Grays’ work focuses on multiple series that address racial inferiority, cultural diversity and cuisine. Her work was recently selected to be included in the LSU Museum of Art’s permanent collection by way of the Winifred and Kevin P. Reilly Initiative for Underrepresented Artists and she received an Honorable Mention Award at the 3rd Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art. Sneed-Grays hopes that her work encourages the exploration of different cultures and brings awareness to the ongoing injustices happening to the black community.
These acquisitions were made possible by The Winifred and Kevin P. Reilly Initiative for Underrepresented Artists and is also supported by the generous donors to the LSU MOA Annual Exhibition Fund.
